[edit]From earlier *šampas, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źámbas (compare Lithuanian žam̃bas), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵómbʰos. Replaced Proto-Uralic *piŋe as an anatomical term (but compare *pii).
