From an internal locative morpheme *-s- + Proto-Uralic *-na (locative suffix), with simplification *-sn- > *-ss-, except in the alternative form *-hna where the *-s- underwent lenition instead. Cognate with Proto-Samic *-snē, Proto-Mordvinic [Term?].
