Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Traditionally held to derive from a Uralic lative suffix *-s, but it is uncertain whether such a suffix even existed. Ylikoski (2016) rejects this etymology, and, while he states that more research is needed, posits that the Finno-Samic coaffix could be cognate with the Proto-Samoyedic coaffix *-ntə- (Finno-Samic *-s- < Uralic *(-n) sV(...)- > Samoyedic *-ntə-), perhaps deriving from a Proto-Uralic postpositional noun like *sɜ, in turn perhaps reduced from a Proto-Uralic noun like *sekä, *seke, *sexe meaning “inside, interior”.[1]
