Proto-Celtic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *weyk- (“to overcome”) + *-tā (verbal noun suffix).
Noun
[edit]*wixtā f
Usage notes
[edit]This word was generally confused with *wextom in Insular Celtic due to becoming homophones by regular sound change, the only distinguishing factor between the two words being their genders. In Brittonic, the sense "time" of *wextom was reassigned to this feminine word, and in Scottish Gaelic the originally feminine military senses of *wixtā turned masculine.
