Contains the suffix *-tus.

Irslinger derives this from Proto-Indo-European *ǵar- (to shout, call), but if this root is reocnstructed with a laryngeal like as *ǵeh₂r-, this comparison becomes impossible (*gartus and not *gritus would have resulted).
