[edit]From the compound of *gwɨd- + *bod (“to be”), earlier *wibbutā < *widbutā, from Proto-Celtic *wid-, *windeti (“to know, to see”) + *butā, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to see, to know”) + *bʰuH- (“to be, become”).
