Reconstruction:Proto-Balto-Slavic/uź
Appearance
Proto-Balto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Of disputed origin. Often derived from a Proto-Indo-European *ups, from *upó (“under, below”), and connected to Old Norse upp (“up”). This is formally acceptable for the Slavic forms, via the regular loss of the labial stop p and sandhi variation with *z; however, the Baltic forms cannot descend from this form.[1] (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Perhaps the Baltic forms were borrowed from the Slavic forms?”)
