Prakrit

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. CDIAL reconstructs an older form with an original long -ū-. Descendants with and without the initial retroflex suggest substrate origin. Attested only with suffixes, e.g. 𑀠𑀼𑀁𑀠𑀼𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀇 (ḍhuṃḍhullaï, wanders, seeks). From the same source as Late Sanskrit ढुण्ढ् (ḍhuṇḍh) and ढुण्ढन (ḍhuṇḍhana).
