Appearance
Old Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Iranian *wrinǰiš[1] (compare Sogdian ܒܪܝܢܢܨ (βrync /βrinč/), Mazanderani وینج (vinj)), unexplained nasalized variant of *wriHǰíš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wriHǰʰíš, whence Sanskrit व्रीहि (vrīhí, “rice”). Further cognate with Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐼼𐼸 (rysk /rise/), Pashto وريژې pl (wriže), Khotanese [script needed] (rrīysu), Yagnobi rēžōna, Zazaki riz, Northern Kurdish riz, Ormuri رېزان (rēzan), Talysh برز (berz), Gilaki بج (bəj), Kermanic beray.
