Expected reflex of Proto-Slavic *cědìti (from an earlier pre-palatalized form *kědìti). Cognate with Old East Slavic цѣдити (cěditi), Old Church Slavonic цѣдити / ⱌⱑⰴⰻⱅⰻ (cěditi), Old Czech cěditi.
