Etymology

Uncertain; presumably from Proto-Germanic *hwekkaną, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeǵ⁽ʰ⁾-néw-ti, from *kʷeǵ⁽ʰ⁾- (to flee, escape) +‎ *-néwti. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *čeznǫti (to disappear), Latin conquinīscō (to crouch down).[1]
