[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *klopp, *klapp, from Proto-Germanic *kluppaz, *klappaz (“something balled up or round”), from Proto-Germanic *klappaz (“made into a ball, round”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (“to form into a ball”). Cognate with Middle High German klupf, klapf ("rock, cliff, cliff top"; dialectal German Klapf). Related also to Old Norse klǫpp (“pierlike rock, stepping stone in a stream”), whence Icelandic klöpp (“rock mass, flat rock”), from Proto-Germanic *klampō. Compare also Proto-Germanic *klumpô (“clump, mass”).
