- Proto-West Germanic *smāhōn, from Proto-Germanic *smēhōną. Equivalent to smā (“small, little”) + -on (“factitive suffix”).
- Proto-West Germanic *smāhēn. Equivalent to smā (“small, little”) + -on (“stative-fientive suffix”).
