Etymology

From the plural of *versōrium (reinterpreted as a feminine singular), comprised of versus (swept) +‎ -ōrium (instrumental noun-forming suffix). The base verb verrō (sweep) also survives in Ibero-Romance. For a similar formation, cf. Late Latin rāsōrium.
