From trūdō (“shove”) +‎ -icāre, with early syncope of /ĭ/ and assimilation of /dk/ to /kk/ (cf. *fīgicāre).

An origin in Proto-Germanic *þrukkijaną (“press”) has also been suggested but appears unlikely.
