Etymology 1

[edit]

From an East Central German word for “sow on heat”, derived from Middle High German rangen (to run back and forth), from the root of Proto-Germanic *wringaną (to wring). Related with wringen and rangeln (to scrap, wrestle). Note that the loss of initial w- in Range is simply the regular High German development, whereas in rangeln (which is of Low German origin) it has a different reason; see the lemma.
