[edit]From Middle High German rache, from Old High German rahho, hrahho, from Proto-West Germanic *hrakō, from Proto-Germanic *hrakô, from Proto-Indo-European *kreg- (“to croak, crow”). Cognate with Old English hraca (“throat”). Related also to English retch (“to clear one's throat”), Icelandic hráki (“spit, saliva”).
