From Ukrainian Подніпров'я (Podniprovʺja): Russian and Ukrainian по- (po-, circum-) + Ukrainian Дніпро (Dnipro, Dnieper) + Russian and Ukrainian -о́в (-óv, -ian) + Ancient Greek -ία (-ía): literally “along the people of river Dnieper lands”
