pitäjän + mäki, a kind of translation of the Swedish name Sockenbacka. The name probably refers to the hilly terrain and that the place was close to the border between what were then the rural municipalities (and now modern municipalities) of Helsinki and Espoo. Specifically, when coming from Espoo, travellers would have to go up a steep hill after seeing the landmark marking the border between the two municipalities.[1]
