Etymology

First attested as epangne [read: epenregae] in 1275. Borrowed from West Frisian Parregea, of unknown etymology. Proposed derivations from a personal name or a compound of a demonym derived from Old Frisian up (up, upper) and ein (end) and (village, village area)
