Etymology

[edit]

First attested as in uttarlo in 838. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of otter (otter, Lutra lutra) and lo (pool), although it is strange that a location in the forested and arid Veluwe would be named after an aquatic mammal. A reinterpration of the first element as Old Dutch Authari (a personal name) is problematic as the initial element lacks a genetive case ending in the oldest attestations.

  • Hyphenation: Ot‧ter‧lo
