Orkanger

  1. one of the biggest towns in Trøndelag, Norway. Located in Orkland municipality, on the mouth of Orkla river. The town got it's city status in 2014, but may sometimes be considered as de-facto not a real city, but rather a town, while Trondheim is called by the locals as "The City" (By'n).

Etymology

A made-up name from the early 20th century, when the town became established as a united populated area. Compound of Orkdal +‎ anger (compare to Hardanger). The area around the harbour was previous known as Feskøra (oral) or Orkedalsøyri (Landsmål), although it had no clear borders and no clear center.
