Etymology

[edit]

ori (stallion) +‎ Mattila, originally a farm established by Matti Laurinpoika in the 16th century. According to Antero Penttilä, the ori(h)- element was added to the farm name as Matti may have been known for his horsemanship, while also distinguishing his farm from some other Mattila.

The name was spelled as Orihmattila until the 19th century, reflecting orih, an older form of ori.
