Etymology
[edit]- (Friesland) First attested as aesterma zyl in 1449. Borrowed from West Frisian Eastrum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian āst (“east-, eastern”) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
- (Limburg) First attested as oesterham in 1257. Derived from a compound of ooster (“eastern”) and ham (“alluvial land deposited in the bend of a watercourse”).
