Etymology
[edit]First attested as oroscoth around the beginning of the 11th century. Compound of an unclear first element and either schoot (“piece of land that juts upward”) or schot (“enclosed space, fenced-in land”). The first element may be cognate with Old Dutch or (“sand mixed with pebbles”). Compare Oerle and Olen.
