Etymology

[edit]
  • (Gelderland) First attested as in hatalle in 815-816. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *haþuwalja- (battle wall, military camp). A derivation from a compound of an unknown first component and lo (light forest) does not match with the oldest attestations. Compare Heitel.
  • (Noord-Brabant) First attested as hedel in 1312. Potentially named after the village in Gelderland.
