Etymology
[edit]- (Gelderland) First attested as in hatalle in 815-816. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *haþuwalja- (“battle wall, military camp”). A derivation from a compound of an unknown first component and lo (“light forest”) does not match with the oldest attestations. Compare Heitel.
- (Noord-Brabant) First attested as hedel in 1312. Potentially named after the village in Gelderland.
