First attested as iodichem [read: i odichem] in 918-948. Etymology uncertain. The toponym appears to be a compound of an unknown first element and the suffix Proto-Germanic *-ikja-. The element Old Dutch hēm (home, settlement) in the oldest attestation is a scribal insertion.

Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Geverik, Lopik, Maurik, Mook, Niftrik, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.
