[edit]Probably a variant of Nock (“yardarm”), itself from a Low German word meaning "the protruding end of something," probably ultimately related to similar sounding words such as Dutch nok (“ridge of a roof”), English nook, Faroese nakkur (“steep, protruding promontory”).
