From Late Latin Nicolaita, from Hellenistic Ancient Greek Νικολαΐτης (Nikolaḯtēs), from Νικόλαος (Nikólaos, Nicolas); Nicolas of Antioch was associated with the sect, although the word may have come from a different allegorical use of the name.
