Etymology

First mentioned as Nienstadt vor dem Rouwenberge in 1426. Rouwenberg is a spelling variant of Rouvenberg, a medieval castle in the vicinity, now vanished. The castle was mentioned as "castrum Rouvenberg" in 1493.
