Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German murmeltier (14th c.), folk-etymological alteration as murmeln (“to murmur”) + Tier (“animal”) of older murmendīn, from Old High German murmunto (probably through a diminutive *murmuntīn), from Latin mūrem montis (accusative, literally “mountain rat”).
