[edit]19th century, from an Alemannic German or Austro-Bavarian dialect. Possibly from an inherited form of Middle High German mūl + the diminutive suffix -li. Alternatively from Italian mulo with its plural muli associated with that suffix. Ultimately from Latin mulus, whence also Maultier.
