[edit]From Late Middle High German mugel (“lump, clod”), probably ultimately from Proto-Germanic *mūgô, from Proto-Indo-European *muk- (“heap”), similar to Ancient Greek μύκων (múkōn, “pile”). Germanic cognates include Old English mūga (“stack”), Old Norse múgi (“swathe, crowd”).
