[edit]From Old Irish Maire, from Latin Maria, from Ancient Greek Μαρία (María), Μαριάμ (Mariám), from Aramaic מַרְיָם (maryām) or Hebrew מִרְיָם (miryām). Cognate with Irish Muire and Scottish Gaelic Moire.
