- I generally don't create this kind of thing except to temporarily address a module error. There must have been something about the configuration of a module somewhere that this template compensated for. I said in my creation edit summary that it was a temporary fix, so I have no problem with it being deleted. You might first look at Special:WhatLinksHere/Module:zh/data/dial-syn/template and figure out why Template:zh-dial-map/template is linking to it. It's possible that there's still a bug that needs fixing in order to make this truly unnecessary. Chuck Entz (talk) 00:37, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Kc kennylau After looking at Special:WhatLinksHere/:Template:zh-dial-map/template and the template's history, it appears to me that the template was some kind of experiment- nothing except this page links to it. The rfd was added and removed by the same person, who apparently decided that, although useless, it was harmless and not worth the trouble of rfd'ing. Chuck Entz (talk) 00:46, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- I think I figured it out: there's a whole set of Module:zh/data/dial-syn submodules that have corresponding Template:zh-dial-map subtemplates. I think Template:zh-dial-map/template was created as a demo for the
{{zh-dial-map}}template, and the code looks for a submodule with the same submodule name as the subtemplate name. Since the submodule name was "/template", the module would throw an error if there was no "/template" submodule. Chuck Entz (talk) 01:13, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

Aha, I understand it now! Template:zh-dial-map/template was created because it is the preload page for creating a new zh-dial-map page. For example, go to here and click "the map" and you will be led to a page with a preloaded text, and the url contains exactly "preload=Template:zh-dial-map/template".
