Singapore Cantonese

[edit]

@The dog2 Just wanted to make sure, 愛 can be used even with verbs after it? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:06, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: I got it from here, and unfortunately it doesn't provide context. I've always used 要 or 想 when speaking Cantonese myself. The dog2 (talk) 01:08, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: I'd leave it out for now then because the module defines it as "to want to" + V. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:45, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: BTW, I just wanted to make sure, when you're adding Singapore Cantonese, are you basing it off your own knowledge of Cantonese or do you know people who are kind of native speakers of Cantonese in Singapore? I don't think I see a lot of links in your edits for Singapore Cantonese. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:59, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: Both my parents know how to speak Cantonese, and while they're not native speakers, their Cantonese was picked up from neighbours and business partners, and you can consider their proficiency level to be near native. So what I base Singaporean Cantonese on is based on the words I have heard from them. For instance, my mum will speak Cantonese whenever she orders food from a wonton noodles stall. Some of the other stuff I have added are based on YouTube videos in Cantonese made by Singaporeans. The dog2 (talk) 02:08, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: Okay, good to know! — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 02:10, 30 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

KL Cantonese

[edit]

@NameName233, are you a speaker of KL Cantonese? If not, do you have a source for the recent edit here? And are you sure 愛 is used as "to want to" (not "to have to") in KL Cantonese? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 17:43, 15 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

My edit is based on what I hear from KL Cantonese speakers.
Maybe you can take a look at this forum thread. NameName233 (talk) 18:01, 15 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@NameName233: Thanks for the link. Just to be sure, is 愛 actually used as "to want to" in the context of 愛 + V such as "I want to eat"? The link doesn't really talk about this situation, but this module is only for this situation. We are not include "to want" as in "I want food" in this module. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 18:47, 15 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung I usually hear KL Cantonese speakers say "我愛食飯" to mean "I want to eat" so yes, I guess. NameName233 (talk) 05:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
