Add topicCharacter for "hiap" in Southern Min variations (翕鐵, 協石, etc)
[edit]Are they all derived from "熁鐵石"? But "嗋's" definition might make more sense (合/吸), which the Hakka entry use. And I'm just guessing so this doesn't really have any relevance, but "熁鐵石" is like a medical term, all historical usage of it I could find are from medicine books, maybe they just changed the "口" to "火" because of the concept "火氣" from Chinese medicine?
I don't know, it's just that in my Teochew dialect at least, we say "hiap" as a verb as well, like to attach something magnetically (e.g. 口 hiap-鐵 hiap 落去; (MagSafe) hiap 起去充電, etc), and "協" just doesn't really make sense (to me).
Also the Hokkien pronunciations I can find of "翕" all list it as "hip", so maybe new entries with 熁/嗋 would be better suited for "hiap" too. Oh! Tea (talk) 21:00, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
