Split this entry

[edit]

Need to split this entry, because Wenzhou dialect has different words for "to play" and "to play with", namely "嬉" and "攪". Mteechan (talk) 19:52, 3 July 2016 (UTC) Reply

Quanzhou

[edit]

@Justinrleung Hey, just wondering why you put on Quanzhou? 閩南方言大詞典 only shows Xiamen and Zhangzhou as using this word. Thanks! --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 13:55, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mar vin kaiser: It's probably a mistake. I've removed it. Thanks for checking this! — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 15:42, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Fluoromethyl 孛相 isn't the same word as 白相? —Suzukaze-c (talk) 22:29, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Suzukaze-c: what is classified as a variant? is it when a different character is used with no change to the reading? Fluoromethyl (talk) 22:50, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Fluoromethyl: Yes. —Suzukaze-c (talk) 07:01, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Suzukaze-c: In that case, I don't think 孛相 is a variant of 白相, as 孛 (5beq) has a different reading to 白 (5baq).Fluoromethyl (talk) 08:32, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Then it seems to be an "alternative form" relationship (rather than a 異体字 relationship), since the pronunciation is still similar. I personally don't really mind it being here then. —Suzukaze-c (talk) 08:52, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Suzukaze-c, Fluoromethyl: My understanding is that 白 is not pronounced as 5baq in 白相. 上海话大词典 has 白相 as the main form and 孛相 as an alternative form; its pronunciation is given as /bəʔ¹¹ ɕiã²³/ (5beq xian in our system) regardless of how it's written. We should either have 白相 or 孛相, not both. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 21:56, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: In that case, I think 白相 should be kept, as 孛相 doesn't appear to be in use anymore, at least, according to the hits I got on Tatoeba - 29 results for 白相, just 1 for 孛相, which suggests it isn't used in Modern Shanghainese. Oh, and the Potts textbook I cited was published in 1924. Fluoromethyl (talk) 23:53, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Fluoromethyl: It's not completely gone in Modern Shanghainese; it's just a less common way of writing it. 上海方言詞典 (2007) writes it as 孛相, and 上海话大词典 (1997) also mentions 孛相 as a variant. But yeah, 白相 should be the "main" form here. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:58, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: My bad. I suppose it doesn't need a page of its own. Fluoromethyl (talk) 11:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
