Time vs Event

@Justinrleung p.513 of 漢語方言詞彙 distinguishes two types of 晚 (時間 vs 事情). I don't think there is such a clear-cut distinction in practice (e.g. in Cantonese, both 晏 and 遲 can be used in the sense of 來晚了). What do you think? RcAlex36 (talk) 14:40, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

@RcAlex36: I agree with 漢語方言詞彙's treatment. To me, in Cantonese, 晏 is late in time (瞓到咁晏 = "sleep till it's so late (in the day)") and 遲 is (遲咗三分鐘 = "late for 3 minutes (based on a set time for an event, e.g. the start time of a class)"). Wouldn't you agree that it's weird to say 瞓到咁遲 if you just meant it relative to the day or 晏咗三分鐘 if you just meant it relative to an event? — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 18:26, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

@Justinrleung: Yeah this makes sense, but one can say both 你晏咗嚟 and 你遲咗嚟 in Cantonese, although the latter seems more common. RcAlex36 (talk) 18:30, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

@RcAlex36: Ah crap, I heard it in a video, but it's so long ago that I forgot which video it is. But I vaguely recall it was some thing like "咁夜", as in "this late at night". The dog2 (talk) 04:23, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
