扔、拋、擲
[edit]@The dog2, @Justinrleung: How should we distinguish the above three words here? They all have the meaning of "to throw". RcAlex36 (talk) 10:44, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- @RcAlex36: Verbs are tricky. I think they're synonyms (in a broad sense). Xiandai Guifan Hanyu Cidian defines 擲 as "拋;扔". — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 15:03, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- @RcAlex36, Justinrleung: Should 投 be included then? It also means "to throw", but it's a different type to throwing. It's mostly used in the sense of a basketball-style throw. The dog2 (talk) 16:41, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- @The dog2: I guess so, but not as a dialectal synonym unless it's used commonly for most objects. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 17:37, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- 投 can be used for any object, but it refers to a specific style of throwing. That's the term you will use when you throw a basketball as the hoop, so if you're going through the exact same motion trying to throw some rubbish into the rubbish bin from a distance, you can use it too. The dog2 (talk) 22:39, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- @The dog2: True. I think 投 is throwing at a specific goal (hoop, bin, bull's eye, etc.). I guess we should leave 投 out then? — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 00:26, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- Sure, I'm happy to leave it out. Alternatively, we can put it in with a note. The dog2 (talk) 00:44, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- @The dog2: I'd just leave it out then. Notes can get messy. Also, are we including "throw away" in here? 抌 in Cantonese seems more like "throw away" than just "throw". — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 01:10, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
I would say yes. If you saw the video I mentioned in one of my edit summaries though, it seems that 枕 was used to just mean "throw'. Of course, the woman who said it is a native Teochew speaker from Shantou, and Cantonese is her second language, so she might have made a mistake. The dog2 (talk) 01:14, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- @The dog2: Actually, let's keep them separate. 漢語方言詞彙 has two separate entries, one for "throw" and one for "throw away". Also, while 抌 is often "throw away", it could also be "throw". — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 01:18, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Hokkien 揕
[edit]@Justinrleung Hey, just wondering where you got the character 揕, and is that tàn? 闽南方言大词典 has 掟 for tàn. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 10:47, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Mar vin kaiser: That's not tàn, but tìm, on page 314 in 闽南方言大词典. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 10:54, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Justinrleung: Oh! I see. Here we say thìm, which is the variant in Xiamen and Zhangzhou also. Thanks. Though we have a usage difference though. For example, for throwing away garbage, we use tàn, but we don't use hìⁿ or thìm. The latter two sound like you're throwing the trash to a far distance. It seems to be connected to what The dog2 is saying about there being differences.--Mar vin kaiser (talk) 11:01, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Mar vin kaiser: Yeah, I think this module should only be throwing without the intention of not owning the object (so 投擲 rather than 丟棄). — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 11:16, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
