幫忙 vs. 幫助

@The dog2, I don't think these should be treated as equivalent in the dialectal synonyms. The main distinction is that 幫忙 is intransitive (does not take an object) but 幫助 is transitive (takes an object). — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 19:06, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

@Justinrleung: Fair point. But my impression is that some of the dialects may not make that distinction. My Teochew is not fluent, but I've heard people say "伊相輔我" in Teochew before, while I've never heard anyone say "佢幫手我" in Cantonese, or "伊鬥相共我" in Hokkien. What should we do about those? @The dog2: In Cantonese, we could say 佢幫我手. If we focus on the meaning, 幫忙 is more for physically helping someone, and 幫助 is more general (like helping someone emotionally or financially). It's true there's overlap in the two words, but it might be helpful to split the two. For example, I would have 幫 as a Cantonese equivalent of 幫助 but not of 幫忙. — justin(r)leung _{{ (t...) | c=› }} 19:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
