Transliterations

@Octahedron80, Alifshinobi: Hi. I have a question and a request.

How should terms with irregular pronunciations be transliterated? Somewhat discussed on User_talk:Alifshinobi#Lao_Pronunciation. For example, I've made an entry ບັດເຄຣດິດ. I have manually transliterated it as "bat khrē dit" (phonemically) but maybe it should be "bat khē dit" (or even something else - disyllabic)? It may be a hard question, if we don't have native speakers.

Also, my request. Is it possible to add LC Lao transliterations to the module?

Ideally, we should have a Lao equivalent of Module:th and Module:km to allow usage example and automate transliterations on defined terms but that may be put on a future wish list. --Anatoli T. ^{(обсудить}/^вклад) 01:48, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

@Atitarev: If we are using the LC system, then we have to be consistent. On the last page of https://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/lao.pdf, which comes from the Library of Congress's website, you can see that khitsatīan is used for ຄຼິສຕຽນ (pronounced ຄິດ ສະ ຕຽນ and means "Christian"). So, the rule is simple: When you see a CLV syllable (where C = consonant, L = liquid, e.g., r or l, and V = vowel), you delete the L. So, here it would be "bat khē dit." I do not think we need native speakers for this. Thai speakers also delete liquids like this in colloquial speech. For example, เครดิต is pronounced เค ดิด in spoken Thai. A.S. It is my understanding that the lo-pron module is still being improved. Whenever I catch an error, I tell Octahedron80 on the Thai Wiktionary on his talk page, and he fixes the module. I also hope that the module will eventually support alternative pronunciations. This would take care of the issue you have brought up. Number sign

ໂອຕຣິດ
