@Atitarev, AryamanA Hi. I'm creating an adjective module for Hindi. However I'm a bit confused by the declensions. w:Hindustani grammar mentions three types: type 1 in (oblique/plural masculine -e, feminine ), type 2 in -yā (oblique/plural masculine -ye, feminine -yā), type 3 in -yā̃ (oblique/plural masculine -yẽ, feminine -yī̃). However, the existing Module:hi-decl/adj handles -yā adjectives by giving them oblique/plural masculine -e and feminine , with a footnote saying that oblique/plural masculine -ye and feminine -yī are alternatives. The feminine in -(y)ī in particular disagrees with Wikipedia's assertion that the feminine is -yā, so I'm not sure what's going on. Only one adjective in -yā is declined using this module, नया (nayā, new); perhaps this is a type-1 adjective not a type-2 adjective? If this is the case, do type-2 adjectives such as बढ़िया (baṛhiyā, great, superb) and घटिया (ghaṭiyā, of poor quality) show the same -e/-ye variation in the masculine oblique/plural? Also, are all type-2 adjectives in -iyā or are there also type-2 adjectives in -yā but not -iyā? If all type-2 adjectives are in -iyā, are there also type-1 adjectives in -iyā? I'm asking so I know whether you can reliably tell type-2 adjectives from type-1 adjectives by their form, or if I need to implement an explicit indicator to manually specify which type the adjective is. BTW I see two -yā adjectives whose declension is specified using {{hi-adj-1}}, which agrees with Wikipedia's type-1 endings: इश्क़िया (iśqiyā, amatory) and पराया (parāyā, foreign, alien; another's). Benwing2 (talk) 07:15, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2, AryamanA: Thank you! I don't have much to add on adjectives right now. BTW, my textbook says that some adjectives are invariable, e.g. बढ़िया (baṛhiyā), which seems unpredictable. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 09:18, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA, Atitarev I have implemented a version of the module in Module:User:Benwing2/hi-adjective. Aryaman, can you review User:Benwing2/test-hi-adecl and respond to my questions above when you have a chance? I have done my best in the absence of answers to the questions, but I am not sure everything is correct. Thanks! Benwing2 (talk) 20:32, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2, Atitarev: I'm not sure if it's an idiosyncracy of my dialect or something, but all of those iyā adjectives (iśqiyā, baṛhiyā, ghaṭiyā) are indeclinable for me. Notably, the purported declension baṛhiye/baṛhie only gets a few thousand hits, nearly all of which are actually the imperative polite form of baṛhnā not the adjective. ghaṭiye similarly gets only 200ish hits. I don't think these are standard at least; I'll check further once I'm on a computer (not a phone).
The rest appear great to me! Thanks!! —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 23:48, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA, Atitarev Thanks for your comments. The other supposed type-2 "adjective" given is चूतिया, which is glossed as "asshole, idiot" and appears to be a noun. One other question: do ordinals like पाँचवाँ decline like दायाँ or are they indeclinable? Benwing2 (talk) 23:59, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Looks like they are declinable; Hindi Wikipedia has an entry w:hi:सातवीं अनुसूची, for example. Benwing2 (talk) 00:20, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: Hmm, we can keep the type-2 class maybe but I honestly can't think of an instance where it would be used. I would analyze चूतिया (cūtiyā) as an attributive noun (with the noun paradigm of the singular) or something in that sense, not an adjective. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 02:51, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
And correct on the ordinals! —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 02:51, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA, Atitarev I rewrote the module to eliminate type 2 and use ā-stem in place of type 1 and ā̃-stem in place of type 3. Benwing2 (talk) 02:55, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sanskrit-derived adjectives with feminines

[edit]

(moved from Talk:प्रचारी)

@Benwing2, Atitarev So some Sanskrit borrowed adjectives have feminine forms (but not plural variants). In this case, masc. is प्रचारी, fem. is प्रचारिणी. Should these get a table in your opinion? —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 21:57, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

An example being नागरी प्रचारिणी सभा (nāgrī pracāriṇī sabhā), an organization which promoted the Devanagari script in the 19th and 20th centuries. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 21:57, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA, Benwing2: Perhaps the feminine form can only be displayed in the headword? --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 00:01, 15 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA, Atitarev I think it depends partly on whether the feminine forms are mandatory or optional. If mandatory, then probably they should go in a table. (BTW what happens in the plural? Does the feminine plural use the feminine form or masculine form?) If optional, then perhaps just in the headword. This is just a thought, though. Benwing2 (talk) 00:06, 15 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2, Atitarev: It's not mandatory (it's hyper-Sanskritization), so I think that makes sense; I'll stick it in the headword then. Plural could theoretically use this feminine form too. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 00:10, 15 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Error: तेज़

[edit]

@Benwing2

I'm getting the following error for तेज़:

"Lua error in Module:hi-adjective at line 203: Unrecognized adjective lemma: तेज़" Siddhant (talk) 17:41, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

My bad. तेज़ is indeclinable. Siddhant (talk) 20:27, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
