Inherited from Prakrit पराय (parāya), परायग (parāyaga, belonging to another), from Sanskrit परागत (parāgata, gone), परगत (paragata, belonging with another), or perhaps पराके (parāke, at a distance). See पर (para, distant, a stranger) for more.
