Borrowed from Old Norse Mjǫllnir, from Proto-Germanic *meldunjaz, from Proto-Indo-European *meldʰ-n- (lightning). Compare Old Norse mjuln (fire), Welsh mellt, Slovene mółnja, Russian мо́лния (mólnija).
