Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch marwede, from Old Dutch Meriwido, Merewede, *Meriwidu, a compound of meri (“lake, sea”) + *widu (“wood”). An older, outdated, explanation derives it from an earlier Merwe or Merowe, meaning "wide water".
