• (Limburg) First attested as merehem in 1101. Compound of Old Dutch mere (“lake, pool”) and heem (“home, settlement”). See also Limburgish Maerem.
• (Groningen) First attested as merum in 1422. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of Old Frisian *mere (“pool, lake”) and heem (“home, settlement”) or a derivation from the dative plural form of *mere. See also Dutch Low Saxon Mijrum.
