From Ancient Greek μέροψ (mérops), μέροπος (méropos, bee-eater); the Greek sense evolved from μέροψ (mérops, endowed with speech), as it was used in poetry to describe articulated people who "divided voices," from μέρος (méros, portion) + ὄψ (óps, voice).
