Borrowed from Ukrainian Меліто́поль (Melitópolʹ) and Russian Мелито́поль (Melitópolʹ), derived from Ancient Greek Μελιτόπολις (Melitópolis), compare modern Greek Μελιτόπολη (Melitópoli), from μέλι (méli, honey) +‎ πολις (polis, city).
