Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Potentially attested as in uilla martfelde in 765-779, attested with certainty as maruilde in 815-816. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch *marthu (“marten, Martes sp.”) and veld (“field”). The first element was later reinterpreted as meer (“lake, pool”), and the dative plural form of hoeve (“piece of land of a certain size”) was added by analogy with Veldhoven.
