Etymology

[edit]

Potentially attested as in uilla martfelde in 765-779, attested with certainty as maruilde in 815-816. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch *marthu (marten, Martes sp.) and veld (field). The first element was later reinterpreted as meer (lake, pool), and the dative plural form of hoeve (piece of land of a certain size) was added by analogy with Veldhoven.
